Josquin spent just a short time in Italy, but his stay coincided with the burgeoning use of the printing press to disseminate musical scores. But his fame and influence had less to do with the new technology than his quality of composition. He brought a freshness, lightness and soulfullness to the vocal styles of the day, and many composers imitated these qualities, including the vihuelistas. Mudarra's setting exploits the lower register of the vihuela quite beautifully.
